Portraits of Women Who Lead
As I spent the many hours that it took to complete my portrait commission of Priscilla Sands, I had the time to think about the role that official institutional portraits have played in documenting and honoring leaders. We have many centuries of portraits honoring men who were leaders of state, science, law, business, arts and other fields.
It is the 21st Century, and it is about time that women are equally represented as leaders —without disclaimer, diminishment or question. Walking through institutions ranging from universities, hospitals, legislatures, museums, etc., one is reminded and notified of the the “great men.” And we are all missing out.
In marginalizing the leadership roles of women past and present, we are under-appreciating what women have been, what women are and what women can be for the whole world.
The commitment that I have always brought to my portraits is directed toward honoring women — ranging from educators, CEO’s, homemakers, executive directors, women in the public and private sectors, to community leaders — any woman whom people follow. Please contact me to discuss a portrait commission for yourself or any woman who deserves this permanent expression of esteem.
